Since I just recently redesigned my blog, I feel more confident and more inspired to write. I feel the same way when I clean up my apartment…suddenly I just feel refreshed and ready to take on the world! If your blog is feeling a bit stale and could use some refreshing, here are some ideas.
Deactivate and uninstall any WordPress plugins that you’re not using.
Having plugins installed and/or enabled that you don’t use clogs up your plugins page, creates a potential security risk, and also creates a potential conflict with your theme or other plugins. While you’re at it, go ahead and delete excess themes, too. I always keep the default WordPress theme as a backup.
Remove unnecessary items from your sidebar.
You don’t have to completely clear yours out like I did, but if you’re looking to remove some clutter you may want to start with things like “Recent Posts” and “Archives.” Most of the time, we don’t present these correctly in the sidebar, which makes them hard to notice and useless to your visitors.
Stay consistent with your use of colors, fonts, elements and picture sizes.
The more you use, the more cluttered and confusing your blog will start to look. This is where it’ll come in handy to have a branding or style guide for your blog.
Narrow down your post categories.
If you use too many categories, you’ll start to put posts in the wrong places and make it harder for people to look through your posts. Try to stick to a set number of categories, like 10. Don’t forget, you can also go into WordPress to add and change categories on certain posts, too. And if you remove a category, it will not remove the posts. Calm down with the tags, too. Tags are great, but if you’re thinking they’ll help your SEO, they won’t. The best you can hope for with that is that Google will index your tag pages and make them show up in searches. This is generally not helpful to most bloggers, unless you are trying to increase search engine traffic.
Try to clean up the content of your blog.
This is something I’m still working on, myself. If you’re feeling like your visitors might be confused about what your site is about, or if you’re stuck on what to write about, sit down and think about what you want your blog to be like. What do you want it to accomplish? What message do you want to convey? What do you like to talk about?
And, of course, you can always have your blog redesigned.
Nothing freshens things up like a brand new look.
