It’s been a really great summer for television! I’ve picked up a few shows and I’ve also discovered that while I love all kinds of shows, my favorite are dark thrillers and dramas. I wanted to share some of the shows I’ve been loving this summer. Some of them are new shows and some aren’t.
Just wanted to mention that Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley are two of my favorite summer shows but they both just finished out their new seasons recently. So they’re not on this list.
You guys, if you are not watching this show, you need to start. This is a hilariously absurd action/drama with a supernatural twist.
It’s about a guy named Jesse Custer (played by Dominic Cooper) who moves back to his hometown to escape his past and be a Preacher like his late father. But trouble, and lots of interesting characters, seem to follow him as he struggles between being who he was and who he wants to be. And then things get really complicated when he somehow develops the ability to control people.
I have completely fallen in love with all of the characters and I’m developing a huge crush on Dominic Cooper. If you like “different” shows and aren’t easily offended, you should definitely check it out. I would say if you liked the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service then you’ll probably like this.
2. Mr. Robot
Another fantastic show that I highly recommend! I started watching this show in June and I instantly fell in love with it. I think it’s because I can relate to Elliot as an introvert and a generally awkward person. The show so different from anything else on TV right now and I love the way they tell the story. It took such a major turn mid-season that by the end I felt like I was going crazy. That is some really great storytelling. I cannot wait for season 2 to start this week!
Outcast is super low-key, character-driven, and very slow-paced, but there’s something about it that I just love. It’s about a guy with a mysterious past who discovers that he may have the power to help people who have been possessed.
4. The Last Ship
The Last Ship is a very underrated show about the last American Naval ship on the water after a viral outbreak. It has an amazing cast and a ton of action. I’ll admit I don’t always know exactly what people are talking about (there’s a lot of strategic planning and Naval jargon) but the plot is still easy to keep up with.
This show just ended season 2 in the past week, but since I’m still catching up (I’m a couple of episodes behind) I kept it on the list. If you haven’t heard of Outlander, it’s a romance drama with a bit of time travel mixed in, about a woman caught between 2 men in completely different time periods. That sounds odd, but it’s actually a really great show. I LOVED the first season — it kept me on the edge of my seat. But the 2nd season is so dark and the pacing has been very slow. I’m not as excited to watch it as I was last season, but I still love the show so I’ll definitely keep watching. This show is so brutal though. It’s so beautiful at times (the acting, wardrobe, locations, etc.) and at other times it’s graphic and crazy and just rips your heart out.
6. Young & Hungry
Young & Hungry is such a cute show. It’s about a personal chef who accidentally (not sure if that’s the right word?) sleeps with her new boss on her first day, which sets up the funny and awkward situations they get into throughout the rest of the series.
I am watching some other shows too, like Pretty Little Liars and BattleBots, but those 6 are my favorites. What are you watching this summer? Any recommendations?
