5 Things I Loved About Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

I went into this movie not expecting much of anything, since I didn’t know anything at all about Doctor Strange. But of course I was super excited to see it because I’m a total Marvel movie fangirl. The trailer looked really good, but I’ve stayed away from most of the trailers, clips, and interviews because I think they show way too much. I thought this movie would be a cross between The Matrix and Inception, and I think I was right about that — which is awesome because The Matrix is my favorite movie and Inception was pretty amazing.

Doctor Strange is the latest movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s pretty different from all of the previous movies. If you don’t know anything about it, here’s a short summary of the movie: A successful and cocky Neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Strange, turns to mystic arts as a way to heal and get his career back after a terrible accident. So basically, we’re dealing with magic, here. It was directed by Scott Derrickson, who’s known for directing horror films like Sinister 1 & 2.

I loved this movie! I thought it was so much fun and I loved the characters and the visuals. I think it’s a really refreshing addition to the MCU and I’m really excited for what’s next with this character.

A few thoughts I had:

1. The visual effects in this movie are stunning.

I absolutely loved the graphics, stunts, and visual effects in this movie! It must have been very expensive and extremely complex to make, especially for the scenes where the entire room or building is moving. There are some really trippy visuals and it’s really cool to see.

2. I wasn’t expecting this to be funny!

I wasn’t expecting this movie to be funny, but it is! It’s not as silly as Guardians of the Galaxy for example, but there are definitely some funny moments.

3. The casting is phenomenal.

I’m fully aware of the controversy surrounding this movie and its casting of The Ancient One, and I completely agree. Besides that lapse in judgement, the casting was on point. Benedict Cumberbatch was so charming as Doctor Strange, and I really like him a lot after seeing him in this movie! I’ve seen him in a few things and he’s a good actor but I wasn’t that into him (I’ve never watched Sherlock, so I’ve never seen him in that). But he really is great.

Chiwetel Ejiofor was excellent as Karl Mordo. He brought so much depth to a pretty flat character, and he did a wonderful job with what he was given. Mads Mikkelsen’s character Kaecilius was a pretty weak villain but he was still good. And Benedict Wong…I loved him!

4. The cloak is one of my favorite “characters.”

You’ll understand what I mean if/when you see the movie.

5. The after-credits scenes.

Make sure you stay until after the credits for 2 bonus scenes! There’s one scene right after the movie ends and another one after the credits roll. They give you a little tease of what’s next for this character and the series.
