This weekend I had a chance to check out The Fate of the Furious! We ordered our tickets early and chose a time when it wouldn’t be as busy, which was around lunch time on Saturday. I’m a huge fan of the franchise and I’ve loved every single one of the films, so I was really excited to see this, although I was of course sad about Paul Walker not being in it.
This is of course the 8th installment of the Fast & Furious car-themed action movie franchise. This one is very different, because instead of the team going up against an enemy that’s usually a threat to their freedom or to them as a family, Dom is somehow compromised by a woman named Cipher (played by Charlize Theron) and the rest of the group has to hunt him down.
Well I fully enjoyed this movie because it gave me what I asked for: awesome action sequences, killer fight scenes, and lots and lots of cars. Although a couple of the action sequences were a little ridiculous (if you’ve seen the movie you might know what I’m talking about). But I give them props for being creative and bringing us stuff we haven’t seen before.
It dragged on a bit, and I feel like they could have condensed some parts. Without Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Gal Gadot, and Sung Kang the movie had such a different vibe from all of the previous movies and of course it’ll never be the same as when Paul was alive. I can imagine it must have been hard for the cast to go on without him. But I think they’ve handled it well and I still enjoyed it.
The core cast was great as usual, but I also really liked the new characters played by Charlize Theron and Scott Eastwood. Vin Diesel was SO good in this and I loved that he showed so much emotion in one particular scene. Jason Statham was so good in this movie and he kinda stole the spotlight and was one of my favorite things about this movie.
I don’t understand what they’re doing with Nathalie Emmanuel’s character Ramsey though and I really wish they’d give her more to do. I understand she’s the hacker of the group…but come on, can they let her punch someone or something? Can she at least have her own car? I also feel like they tried a little too hard to make Dwayne Johnson funny and I wish they would have just left the comedy to Tyrese because he has way better comedic timing. But it wasn’t a deal-breaker for me.
The CARS though…this movie seemed to show off more cars than usual. No complaints here. My husband (who is a big car guy) quietly named off some of them to me, including the new Dodge Demon. Nice! The soundtrack to the movie was really good too.
Overall it was really good! It’s not my favorite of the franchise but I got exactly what I came for so I can’t complain. I’m excited to see what they do with the next one!
